Choosing the best virtual reality glasses for all iPhone models: rating by model + reviews

Greetings to all who are interested in technology and the development of VR. Today I will tell you about how device developers were able to implement virtual reality technology for Apple devices. Virtual reality glasses for iPhone are significantly inferior to analogues from a competitor in the face of Samsung, but still “cartons with lenses” are gradually disappearing from the market. In this article, I will cover everything related to virtual reality for Apple devices from the relevance of content to the compatibility of glasses with iPhone versions.

What is virtual reality

VR technology is not new. It has been developing for 5-7 years and is used in various fields from automotive design to training field doctors and soldiers.

  • Using a PC – HTC Vive Cosmos , Oculus Rift S , Valve Index .
  • For mobile devices – all points of the economy segment and the middle class .
  • Standalone headsets (like Oculus Go or Mi VR Standalone ).

However, while virtual reality for entertainment is far from ideal. Top-end devices are too expensive, and they also require a powerful PC, while budget devices are not far from “cartons with lenses”.

The task of virtual reality glasses is immersion in three-dimensional space with the effect of presence.

VR has a lot of prospects, but progress rests not only on the development of the technology itself, but also on the hardware. Unfortunately, all available headsets are presented in the form of a plastic construction with special lenses. Their purpose is to fix the iPhone or Android-based smartphones.

What are VR goggles for?

In short, virtual reality glasses are needed to create the effect of presence. This is true not only for games and videos, but also for training materials, creating virtual simulations, etc. I want to clarify that virtual reality may have differences depending on the devices used:

Rating of the best VR glasses for iPhone

Let’s move on to the most popular virtual reality glasses that can be used with the iPhone. Unlike Samsung, which released special Gear VR for its smartphones, Apple does not yet produce a VR headset, so the universal or no-name versions are used for the iPhone. They are much cheaper, but, unfortunately, the quality of work with virtual reality technology is also lower. I will clarify that iPad mini does not support virtual reality and all glasses are compatible only with iPhones.

For iPhone 5 5s SE

For “five” is mainly used Color Cross. This is a budget model of VR glasses that only works with the iPhone 5 series. The approximate price is 1800-2000 rubles.

Also for the 5th line, universal and, perhaps, the most popular VR Box 3D glasses are suitable. With an average price of $40, the device has a more functional body and better lenses compared to cardboard boxes. But it still loses significantly to Gear VR .

For iPhone 6 6s

The most budgetary for the “sixes” are Homido devices . These are the Mini and Cardboard models. The latter are almost an exact copy of Google Cardboard, although they will cost a little cheaper, 400-450 rubles.

In fact, these glasses are no different from ordinary lenses and any cardboard box.

In addition to the “cardboard” VR Box 3D (including the outdated VR Box2) is also suitable for the 6th series as a universal headset. Rombica VR360 v01 can be considered a VR Box competitor for the 6th line, although at a price of 2000-2500 rubles they are not equipped with even minimal controls.

For iPhone 7 and 7 plus

For the 7th line, they usually use, for example, the most primitive “cartons” from Google or Homido, if we talk about the low price segment. But the top ones for the “sevens” are Fibrum. Unlike other budget devices, they allow people with vision problems to use the technology. The cost of such a helmet is from 7 to 8 thousand rubles, which puts it in the middle price category.

For iPhone 8 and 8 plus

The cheapest option for the “eights” are Ritech 3D glasses with a cost of $ 13-15. The next position is Pansonite VR glasses. They include a controller and have built-in headphones, although they cost $40 already.

The most expensive choice for the Series 8 will be the Vrizzimo virtual reality glasses. The only plus for the Polish manufacturer is the improved viewing angle (105°).

For iPhone X

Any model that supports the desired screen size is suitable for iPhone X. Most often, GEARSONE or any kind of VR Box is bought for iPhones.

Top VR games and apps for iPhone

Consider the top applications and programs for the iPhone that allow you to apply virtual reality technology. I want to immediately disappoint everyone who dreamed of immersing in three-dimensional worlds – Apple does not pay much attention to VR, so we will mostly talk about those applications in iTunes that have already received support for virtual reality, for example, Youtube.

  • Google streetview. Allows you to better view the three-dimensional mode for Google-maps;
  • Star Chart VR. The application allows you to view the solar system at different distances. Star Chart is more a demonstration of the potential and possibilities of virtual reality than a full-fledged entertainment.
  • News applications New York Times (NYT VR) and USA TODAY (VR Stories by USA TODAY).
  • YouTube. Source of main VR content in video format.
  • Roller Coaster VR. Primitive in terms of graphics roller coaster.
  • bookful. The application “revives” the animation of books, has a serious potential for development.
  • Discovery VR. Designed to view 3D video from the Discovery channel in virtual reality glasses.

The rest of the applications were not included in the list due to the fact that they duplicate each other’s functions (for example, the VR versions of Roller Coaster).

Although outwardly glasses for the iPhone have become more like advanced headsets, the difference between expensive models and a “cardboard” for 400 rubles is still not felt.

Some manufacturers add larger lenses, others include controllers, headphones, sensors and other features, but all this only increases the comfort of using the gadget. The amount of content is still too small.

In gaming applications, not only are there no hi-end content – they are similar to scrolling through ordinary videos (especially in the absence of Minecraft VR for iTunes). Educational apps are unimpressive, and apps for viewing newspaper articles or books don’t provide any benefit at all, especially when they’re not available to people with vision problems.

The only thing that can somehow brighten up the lack of content for virtual reality technology on the iPhone is Youtube and watching 3D videos. But this is unlikely to be a good reason to buy glasses, especially if some are not cheap.
